Liquid Cocoa: drops of heaven

November 01, 2011

If you are like me, you smiled and breathed an AMEN when the news first came out that dark chocolate was good for you.  However, did you know that you can get all the benefits of dark chocolate in the form of a liquid minus the fat and calories?  Did you know it was possible for your kid’s chocolate milk to be healthy?

I believe that food consumed and enjoyed in pure forms without added dyes, additives, flavors and preservatives are going to do for your body what God created them to do–nourish it.  I enjoy things like real butter, coconut oil and sour cream and do my best to avoid margarine, crisco and low fat dairy products.  I will be the first to say I am not a colorie counter, but I also realize that it isn’t responsable to eat like we don’t care which means we need to know what is in our foods and eat until we are satisfied, rather than “full”.

When I first discovered pure liquid Cocoa Extract, I loved the idea of it but wasn’t quite sure what to do with it.  My friend Selina told me, “One of the things you can make using it is healthy hot chocolate or chocolate milk.  The cocoa extract is higher in levels of total phenolics and flavinoids than green tea, black tea and red wine. So now I get all the benefits of chocolate without the high fat and sugar of chocolate candy.”  To make this healthy chocolate milk simply add a dropper full of liquid cocoa to a glass of milk and stir!  Her 4 year old daughter loves it and my kids do too.

I also discovered that it can make me feel a little better about my favorite non-healthy blended drink by Big Train–Chocolate Peanut Butter.  I used to splurge here and there at a local coffee stand for one of these blended beauties until I discovered I could buy the mix online.  This of course is way worse as now I can make it anytime (which is much harder to say no to).  So as I was saying, to make this sinfully good drink even better (both in taste and some added nutrition), I add a squirt of pure liquid cocoa extract and a big spoonful of raw peanut butter, it is SO YUMMY.  But you have to promise me you won’t wine and complain when you get hooked on it too.  I had to go make myself one just so I could take a photo for this post, such a shame ;) .

I have also posted the label from this powdered drink below so you can see how it doesn’t really line up with my core food beliefs but I have decided to give myself grace in this area :) .

My Pure Liquid Cocoa Extract came from NuNaturals.  They sent me a sample bottle to try out.  If you are interested in trying this product out yourself (or one of the many others that they carry) they have offered a special discount code.  Enter the code:  BLG1211 on the checkout page and you will receive a discount of 15% off your total order.
