Easy Bathroom Organization

April 19, 2010

Do you find that you have too much stuff in your bathroom and not enough places to put it?  Or that you can never really find what you need when you need it?  Here is what worked for me for being able to get it together and find it all.

Step One: Get rid of the excess.

Before you get nervous about what I mean by "excess," all I am really talking about here is a Flylady-style of decluttering.  Essentially, you want to go through your drawers, cabinets, counter tops, and any other storage areas you have in your bathroom and get rid of the empty, seldom used, and expired.  Do you have any soap bottles that you tossed in the cabinet and forgot about?  Make-up in a color that you haven't worn in years?  Old magazines that you never really liked in the first place?  Gather it all and get rid of it!  This frees up lots of space and gets rid of the excess to make steps two and three easier.

Step Two: Go vertical!

Have you noticed that many brushes, picks, and other hair accessories have holes in the handles?  Utilize it!  By adding decorative hooks, or even just thumb tacks if you want to go low-tech, on empty wall space can allow you to hang these necessities in an easy-to-find and accessible area.  This also frees up counter and drawer space.

If you bought hooks and pins that are too large to fit through the holes on your brushes and other accessories, no problem!  Just thread a loop of ribbon through the hole and you are ready to use your new hooks.

As a side note, if you have young children, make sure no cords are hanging down when you put things on the wall.  They can be a strangulation hazard.

Step Four: Add a pretty caddy.

By adding a caddy to the counter, you keep the things you use most often at hand and in one place.  No longer will they seem to take up the whole counter, and it will be easier to find what you need when you need it.  Plus, a caddy looks more polished and pretty than simply laying everything across the counter.  This is a great place to keep hair products, soaps, lotions, and make-up.

Heather had a few photos to share below of how she has used some baskets from IKEA (you can get a set of 4 for $14.99) to organize her bathroom drawers.
