A Savior Has Been Born to You

Luke 2:8-13

And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God …

This is one of the Christmas angel stories that we are more familiar with. There are some shepherds (not the upper echelon of society) just doing their job…camping out with the sheep. An angel of the Lord comes, and what does he say? What do they always say? “Do not be afraid.” The angel had good news – I would say GREAT news! Stupendous news!  The Messiah was here! Their Savior had been born!…and of all people on the planet, they got to find out where he was and how to find him. They were being invited to come and see!

Then something happens that didn’t happen to Zechariah or Mary or Joseph. The one angel is joined by a company of the heavenly host. You know what that is? It’s like a division of heaven’s army – and they were praising God – which is something they do all the time, but this time it was witnessed by men. They had a glimpse into heaven.

Wow!  Can you imagine going home to Mrs. Shepherd and the little shepherd kids in the morning and telling them what you saw?

What recent glimpse into the heart of God have you been able to witness? When is the last time you were in awe about Jesus coming to save us or what he has done in your life? If it has been a while, consider spending some time today asking God to soften your heart and show you His again. You can do it with a child on your lap. He doesn’t need your arms to be free….just your heart.
